The history of a legendary product: 1950, the birth of Mustela Cleansing Lotion
In 1950, Paul Berthomé, the father of the current chairman, joined forces with a pharmacist and Expanscience Laboratories was born. By talking to mothers, they became aware that there was no alternative to soap when it came to baby hygiene, even though it was known to be drying and harsh on the skin.
At the time, the hygiene and skincare routine was time-consuming, whereas women’s lives were becoming increasingly modern. To protect their baby’s delicate skin, at each diaper change they had to add: soap, water, sweet almond oil and talc. The two men thus formulated a revolutionary “2-in-1” product, an emulsion combining cleansing properties and softening qualities.
The first cleansing lotion in Europe dedicated to baby hygiene appeared in 1950. Its texture, gentleness and distinctly recognizable scent have become a symbol of early childhood.
Ever since, Mustela has been taking into account new scientific advances and continually updating its formulas for the benefit of babies, their mothers and healthcare professionals.
