Using sunscreen on babies six months and older is generally considered safe. If your baby is younger than this, it’s best to keep them out of the sun or use shade and protective clothing.
However, sometimes sun exposure is unavoidable for a new baby. In that case, the American Pediatric Association recommends using a small amount of sunscreen on the areas you can’t cover. For instance, you might need sunscreen on your newborn’s face or hands.
Be sure to pick a formula that’s safe for babies. It should be a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as an active ingredient with no harsh chemicals.
After you come back in, be sure to wash the sunscreen off of your baby so the product won’t irritate their skin.
